Zoophycos

This trace fossil is contained within storm dominated delta front deposits found a parasequence of the Emigrant Gap Member of the Frontier Formation, Powder River Basin, Wyoming.  The photo was taken looking up at the base of a sandstone tempestite bed.  This is a typical size Zoophycos occurrence (in this photo from left to right the trace is approximately 20 cm. across and about 15 cm. from top to bottom).

A detail view of the left lobe.  Spreiten are easily visible and record movement through the substrate by the trace maker.

Detail view of the right lobe.

Detail view of the central axis.  Zoophycos suggests a relatively quiescent period of deposition.
